The Growing Popularity of Lower Back Tattoos
It wasn’t until the latter part of the 1990s that lower back tattoos become popular. Young women and old began getting this area of their body tattooed as it seemed to be a uniquely feminine spot for which to sport body art. The lower back tattoo is usually not a small tattoo; instead it usually oblong shaped and follows the slope on either side of the spine.
Typically a lower back tattoo is used to emphasize the sexual attractiveness of a woman. They are generally designed to put emphasis on the curves and shape of a woman’s body. Even though having a lower back tattoo has become generally accepted, for some cultures it means that the wearer is promiscuous and of dubious character. In the United States many refer to them as “tramp stamps.” In Australia they are typically called “arse antlers.”
Why a Lower Back Tattoo
The lower back affords a larger canvass upon which to create body art. For a female wanting a large tattoo, it is a more feminine area for which to create one. Larger tattoos are often displayed on the upper back for males and many women do not feel this is an attractive spot for their gender. Another bonus of getting a lower tattoo is that the body art is less likely to become distorted or stretch resulting in a tattoo that becomes faded or warped because of changes in weight.
Another plus of the lower back tattoo is that it can be displayed when wearing casual clothing, but for those that travel in professional circles, it is easily concealed so as not to detract from their professionalism. With the popularity of low rise jeans and midriff baring tops, lower back tattoos can easily be displayed proudly by the wearer if they so desire.
The Controversy Surrounding a Lower Back Tattoo
Though there have been some misgivings in the medical community regarding lower back tattoos, most studies have found they place no danger on the wearer. Even if a woman chooses to have an epidural during childbirth, the anesthesiologist can easily place the needle in an area that will not affect the appearance or color of the lower back tattoo.
Though some cultures may see a lower back tattoo as an indicator of the wearers purity, many today see it for what it is. A beautiful picture placed in a spot where it can highlight the unique beauty of the feminine form. If someone has another opinion of the wearer, it is almost sure that said person really doesn’t take what others think about them into account. As long as they are happy with their lower back tattoo and its design that is all that really matters.
Angelina Jolie and Eva Longoria both sport lower back tattoos and both are hailed as consummate professionals in their chosen field. Angelina Jolie is hailed as a humanitarian for her efforts on behalf of underprivileged children around the world. It seems that their lower back tattoos have not stopped them from accomplishing everything they set out to do.
