If you ever get the chance to watch a skilled and talented tattoo artist at work, it’s easy to see that it involves more than simply putting designs on a person’s skin. A skilled tattoo artist should be able to visualize art by description or look at a sketch and use his or her talents to make a unique tattoo that is truly a work of art.

While many customers prefer a simple or basic tattoo that has a special meaning to them personally, there are many complex designs that people choose because of their appreciation for the art that is portrayed with a tattoo.

One of the most popular tattoo designs is the Native American tattoos.  Compared to other tribal designs Native American artwork is often chosen because it symbolizes Native American culture and people with Native American ancestry get the tattoos to both learn about and proudly display pride in one’s heritage. If you are interested in tribal designs it is a good idea to first do some research about the different tribes and find out which ones used certain symbols.  Also one’s name can be made into a tribal design of course if the artist has the skills and knowledge to do so.

Another popular design is the Oriental design. If you go to your local tattoo studio you will find a large variety of these designs ranging from simple symbols to intricate artwork.  The tattoos chosen most frequently are Chinese symbols for love, prosperity, eternity, harmony, and luck. Also the zodiac signs are popular.  When looking at these type of designs they may appear to be simple, but actually take a considerable amount of talent and skill to draw them properly.  The thickness and thinness of the characters must be drawn properly in order to look stylish and appealing to the human eye.

Although the traditional religious belief is that one should not get a tattoo, many modern people believe getting a tattoo is not violating religious standards, but a matter of pride in what they believe. Today religious tattoos are one of the most popular types of tattoo designs people get.  Some of the religious tattoos are things such as crucifix’s, Star-of-David tattoos, the saints, Mary, and Jesus.
Whatever design you choose, it shouldn’t be a quick decision.  A tattoo is permanent and should be something you will be proud of for years to come, regardless of what circumstances change around you.
